On 20 November 2018, China’s National Endangered Species Import and Export Management Office announced the suspension with immediate effect of the commercial trade in specimens of the species Pterocarpus erinaceus from Nigeria and the genusDalbergia spp including finished products from the Lao PDR. The suspension is based on notifications issued by the CITES Secretariat on 01 November 2018.

The updated China National Standards on Rosewood (GB/TB18107-2017) classifies rosewood into 29 species, 8 categories and 5 genera. The Pterocarpus erinaceus is listed withinthe rosewood family tree. Ms. Han Yujie, Director of the Quality Department from China’s Wood and Wood Products Quality Supervision and Testing Centre, stated that at present, Pterocarpus erinaceus imported from Nigeria accounts for 60% of total imports of Pterocarpus erinaceus, the main material for low-end rosewood furniture in China. The suspension will likely have a significant impact onthe trade and the Chinese domestic rosewood market.
