China¡¯s newly revised Forest Law includes a forest classification management system

China’s newly revised Forest Law specifies that ecological forests and commercial forests should be managed differently. The forest classification management system has been legally identified as the basic management system in China.

According to the new Forest Law, forests in ecologically fragile or ecologically important areas should be classified as ecological forests. Ecological forests shall be scientifically protected and reasonably used. Harvesting in ecological forests shall be strictly inspected and managed according to the relevant laws and regulations. Organizations or individuals whose forests are classified as ecological forests shall be reasonably compensated following due legal process.

The new Forest Law specifies that forests not classified as ecological forests fall under the commercial forests classification. Commercial forests are allowed to be intensively managed as long as forestry activities have no negative impact on the environment.
