China to establish a national park system by 2025

China has established nature protected areas of various types which have played a significant role in conserving biodiversity and natural heritage.The General Office of the State Council issued the Guidance on the Construction of a Nature Protected Area System Composed Mainly of National Parks in 2019. 

The Guidance sets targets for the establishment of a national park system. By 2020, China’s National Forestry and Grassland Administration (NFGA) shall formulate the overall development plan for national parks and other types of nature protected areas. Further, projects pilotingthe national park system shall be completed, some national parks formed and a united nature protected area classification management system established. 

By 2025, China shall have an established nature protected area system composed mainly of national parks and underpinned by improved laws, regulations, management and supervision.

By 2035, the management of China’s nature protected area system shall be on a par with international standards and significantly improve the country’s provision of ecosystem services. 

NFGA has been in charge of managing nature protected areas in China since April 2018. NFGA will accelerate the implementation of national park pilot projects and the improvement of nature protected areas.
